Midday on Saturday 26th October, and an eager band of Pumpkinophiles gathered at Cradley Village
Hall for the 2024 CVH Grand Pumpkin Weigh-In.
Those participating included Jerry Thomas, Bill Crouch, Antoinette Mulcahy, John Hyde, Helen Fisher,
Scotford Lawrence, Hugh and Liz Thomas, Mary Skinner, Gill Lowder, John and Joy Perkins (who
provided the all-important farm scales to weigh the fruit, hefty or otherwise), and our youngest
contestant Daisy Grafham from the Flower Farm on the main road.
Terry Robshaw won the Egg-Cup for the teensiest pumpkin (2kg) which just managed to beat Mary
Skinner's 2.05kg, and there were many in the mid-weight range -- Jerry Thomas and Antoinette Mulcahy
with 3.05kg and 3kg respectively; Bill Crouch with 5kg; Scotford Lawrence 9kg. A. Madsen, Esq.,
started to get more serious with 12kg, and then came the whopping winners -- sharing 3rd place were
John and Joy Perkins and young Daisy Grafham with 18kg each. 2nd was Helen Fisher with 19kg.
However, runaway 1st were Hugh and Liz Thomas with a whopping 29kg (that's a touch over 64lbs
in old money).
MC Chris Lowder expressed awe at the winners, and delight at so many newcomers to the contest
this year. Over 30 packets of seeds were sold, and all monies went to Cradley Village Hall funds.
