DECEMBER 2023 Ledbury Probus is a non-political non-religious club for retired and semi-retired professionals and businessmen in and around the thriving market town of Ledbury, Herefordshire, and enjoys a membership of over 60 men. We meet every Monday at the Burgage Hall, Ledbury, from 10 am to noon to socialise and enjoy a talk given by a wide variety of speakers on a huge range of subjects. Our primary objective is to provide an informal meeting place for retired men for their mutual interest and entertainment. It is particularly intended to attract those who wish to make new friendships and find new interests, especially if recently moved into the district. After our meeting, many members wander into town to a local hostelry for a coffee, pint or lunch. We have an illustrated talk every week, either from a member or given by an external speaker, covering every topic under the sun. Recent highlights include: Belgian Refugees ~ The Ledbury connection ~ Trafalgar ~ The Highs and Lows of a North Sea Pipeline Engineer ~ Charlie Chaplin ~ James Webb Space Telescope ~ The Wit and Songs of Noel Coward ~ Captain Bligh and Mutiny ~ The Khyber Pass or bust ~ The Great Train Robbery 1963 ~ Special Operations Executive ~ A journey through time and space ~ Talbot House ~ The Cotswold Canals ~ Fakes & Fortunes, Art & Antiques, Forgers & Dealers ~ The English Civil War in Bewdley Kidderminster, Stourbridge and Worcester - and Ledbury! Our talks generally last between 45 minutes to an hour, after which there is a lively question and answer session. Our meeting hall is equipped with modern audio-visual facilities and we also use radio mics for the speaker, and for audience participation during the following active Q&A session. Following the talk on the SOE, our social secretary organised a visit to the Violette Szabo GC Museum at Wormelow. Violette was a secret agent working for the Special Operations Executive and as a result of her bravery was awarded the George Cross and the Croix du Guerre. Our Social Secretary also organises a monthly members' lunch rotating around local good pubs as well as annual Summer and Christmas Lunches where members' guests are invited. So, if you are local to Ledbury and are a retired or semi-retired professional or businessman looking for intelligent conversation in a friendly, sociable group, why not drop by on a Monday morning and approach someone. You'll be pointed in the right direction and, if you like us, join us! Alternatively, visit our website www.ledburyprobus.org.uk for more information.
