Cradley Churchyard Trees: call for volunteers
On Saturday 29th February from 10am we need volunteers
to help dispose of brash and small branches to the bonfire
at Stoney Villa following pollarding of the Yew to the North
West of the Church. Other wood that is not reserved for
craft work will be stacked just to the West of the Church
tower for parishioners to take away (please!).
The Churchyard path to the North-West of the Church will
be closed from Wednesday 26th February and access may
be restricted afterwards until everything is cleared up. Our
Cradley Churchyard plan and H&S risk assessment are on
the notice-board at www.Cradley.org.uk . Churchyard
regulations are on the ‘info’ tab at
www.CradleyChurch.org.uk

magazine with updates available during that time. We aim to

communities the maximum time to get their contributions to

Look what you missed…..
What a great night was had by all those attending the Burns
Night Supper on 24th January at Cradley Village Hall
As pointed out by a few people Burns Night is on 25th not 24th,
Of course the more astute amongst you will have gleaned that
Scottish fiddlers and bagpipe players are of course more
readily
available the day before and of course are CHEAPER!
This great Scottish tradition went a long way to
increasing the profitability of the night which was
organised and run in aid of Cradley Church
funds.
Tickets were sold out before the event and unfortunate illness of some booked allowed some late comers
to squeeze in ensuring the full house to be enjoyed.
Tartan was in abundance, including several of the standard “see you Jimmy!” tartan hats with obligatory
ginger hair protruding. Wines and beers were flowing from the bar to be
topped up with the included “wee dram” with which to toast the Haggis.
The traditional Grace was said:
Some hae meat and canna eat,
And some wad eat that want it,
But we hae meat and we can eat,
And sae the Lord be thankit.
The pipes skirled and were followed into the Hall by the haggis carrier who, to the clapping in time by
the audience with the pipes, paraded the haggis around the room and placed it on a table in full view
of those present. .The tradition of addressing the haggis was there performed, much to the delight of
those gathered, with liberal articulation of the Dirk:
Fair fa' your honest, sonsie face,
Great chieftain o' the pudding-race!
Aboon them a' ye tak your place,
Painch, tripe, or thairm :
Weel are ye wordy o'a grace
As lang's my arm.
The haggis was then toasted with malt whisky by all attending and a fine feast of Haggis Neeps and Tatties was served to all.
There followed an evening of song poetry and dancing much to the delight of those who celebrated another great Burns
Night in Cradley.
Make sure you get your tickets early for the next one as they sell out fast!

LOOKING AHEAD
During 2019, you may have noticed a great deal of repair work, and other improvements being
undertaken at Cradley church. To mark the completion of the work, there will be a series
of 3 talks on different aspects of Cradley church's history, each being given by an expert.
Sunday February 16th: Rev. Stephen Williams, historian whose special subject is the
history of the Three Choirs Festival, will be talking about "Thomas Bisse and the Three
Choirs Festival". Thomas Bisse was Rector of Cradley between 1713 and 1724, a
nationally-famous and eloquent preacher, an enthusiastic promoter of church and
cathedral choral music, and a key figure in the history and development of the Three
Choirs Festival. A lovely display about him can now be seen in Cradley church. The
Festival attracts thousands of people each summer to the Cathedrals of Hereford,
Gloucester and Worcester, and is the oldest music event of its kind in the world.
Sunday 1st. March: Cradley church dates back to Anglo-Saxon times, and is also a beautiful example
of Victorian church restoration. Tim Bridges, Church Buildings Officer for the Diocese of Hereford, and
an expert on Victorian buildings, will talk about the Victorian restoration of Cradley church and explain
how, and why, Cradley church was transformed in the 1860s and 1870s.
Sunday 15th. March: Cradley church has a beautiful stained-glass window showing St.
Francis of Assisi preaching to the birds. The window is linked to a Cradley family, and was
the basis of a recent film project by pupils of Cradley School. Roy Albutt, expert on stained-
glass church windows and author of the book "The Stained Glass Windows of A.J. Davies
of the Bromsgrove Guild", will give a talk on the windows designed and made by Davies in
Bromsgrove, including the St. Francis window. Davies, who died in 1953, also made fine
windows for Hereford and Worcester Cathedrals.
The talks are supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund. They start at 2.30pm., are
free, and will be followed by afternoon tea, served from the church's new kitchen.

What spam is to email, robocall is to telecommunications devices,
such as home phones, mobile phones, and VoIP landlines. There is
usually no real human behind a robocall, only an automated, pre-
recorded message—as the name suggests, calls are made by
computers. On the other hand, cold calls, warm calls, social calls,
and a more personalized and targeted form of cold calling
salespeople are referring to as “smart calls” all require a live
person.
ROBOCALLS
Increasingly we are receiving robocalls and the topic of the moment being
that BT or Amazon are about to terminate your service with them and you
need
to press a number on your keypad to connect with an advisor to
stop
this happening.
DON’T DO IT! IT’S A SCAM

Then dial- 1572 and answer the questions
to have BT block the number phoning you.
If you receive an email like this
one pertaining to be from a well
known company (in this case
Amazon) delete it or put it in
your spam box
It is fake and clicking any of the

There’s no place like Gnome
There once was a lonely gnome who took up residence on a
black and yellow grit bin in a wild spot by a bubbling brook
in Cradley
No one knew where he came from as he just appeared one
day months ago.
He stood there resplendent in his bright red hat watching
the world go by and the buses attempting to run on time on
their way to Worcester. He smiled as the children
waved from the 4x4’s that ferried them to and from
School every day and some who walked even said
hello as they passed him by.
Dog walkers pulled by their persistent pets made no
attempt at communication and the threatening
flood waters crept up his bin. Despite all this and the
windy weather he stayed put
Now he has been joined by others of his kind and
some friends from Disneyland.
The word must be spreading throughout gnome land that Cradley is the place to be so can we expect the
foundation of a gnome colony in Cradley or is the gnome and his friends just here on holiday?
What’s his name and are they waiting for new housing allocation on Pixiefields?

Electric Cars the Facts and Fallacies: Part 2

If you have an electric car experience please let us have your pros
and cons to help others navigate the future-or not!
However range is reduced by cold weather, use of the cab
heater (the power comes from the traction battery),
hilly terrain and driving style. Speed too is a big
factor. Friction losses due to air vary as the square of
speed, ie. going twice as fast uses four times the energy,
thrice as fast uses
nine times the energy.
The range quoted by the manufacturers is total BS, in practice you will get
around 2/3 of this. A bit like the mpg for conventional cars.
Driving.
Electric cars are a wonderful drive. Once you’ve had one, you won’t want to go
back to petrol/diesel. They are especially wonderful for urban driving, twisty
roads , and hilly roads.
They are not good on the motorway, the battery depletes at an alarming rate.
No clutch or gears, seamless and ferocious acceleration from rest. Silence (apart
from tyre noise) and vibration free. As you ease off the power, the regenerative
braking comes in seamlessly. It’s better even than an automatic, you don’t even
have to move your foot from the accelerator to the brake except at very low
speeds. (less than 5mph)
The weight of the motor is insignificant, the main weight is the battery,
invariably located low down under the floor of the car.
Most of us have got used to driving front engine, front wheel drive cars. Electric
cars handle like a mid-engine car. This takes non-Ferrari owners some getting
used to.
One snag is the regenerative braking if the car is rear wheel drive. This means
the regenerative braking is rear wheel only which means you have to watch it in
icy conditions, especially on bends. Electric car are very poor in slippery
conditions even with automatic traction control. Maximum motor torque comes
in at zero revs.
The regenerative braking is variable, depending on the speed of the car and the
state of charge of the battery. (Almost zero if the battery is fully charged, this
can catch you out in the first few hundred yards of travel.)
To save the battery, in cold weather, I put a fan heater in the car for ten minutes
before we set off anywhere.
Pollution.
As well as being fuel efficient, electric cars take the exhaust gas pollution off the
street. These gases are particularly damaging to children. Whoever heard of all
these diseases, mental and physical children suffer from nowadays? They also
reduce brake dust as the mechanical brakes are seldom used. Tyre dust remains
a problem.
The future.
If all new cars are to be electric, it’s very unlikely that everyone in the future can
have one. There just won’t be enough lithium, cobalt or neodymium to go
round. The lithium at least is recyclable.
Also we aren’t generating anything like enough electricity and we don’t have the
infrastructure to distribute it. So enjoy your motoring while you can.

OIL and the future?: Part 1

OIL ?
It has long been prophesied that we’ll run out of oil. The first time I remember was
back in the 1960’s when we were going to be all out by 1980. This was all based
on “known reserves”, likely places remaining where we could look and the then
current technology. Technology however improved meaning that since then we
have had a string of prophesies, at the moment we are due to run out by 2040. At some point in time it
will come true.
Interestingly, the world’s biggest supplier, Saudi Arabia, has started constructing nuclear power
stations, sixteen of them. Nobody knows how much oil remains there (the SAs are not letting on or
lying) but this is may be an indicator that all is not well in Saudi Arabia.
However much the
technology improves, at some point it WILL come true. Before then the price of oil will skyrocket as
depletion kicks in. When we are talking of essentials, it only takes a small shortfall to cause massive
price increases. (Eg, think on houses in the UK at this very moment).
This will also be a time when oil consumers can be held to ransom by the producers (already
happening some would say).
It will take years and £billions to rejig our lives and commerce around
any substitute. The quicker we have to do it, the greater the cost and disruption. Ideally we need an
energy source where we are not depending on imports from dodgy and unstable parts of the world.
OOther factors to consider are the energy recovery balance;
ie energy returned on energy invested. (ERoEI), also the energy payback time (EPBT), that is, the time
taken to recover the energy invested in any power generating/converting project. This includes
manufacture, maintenance and the energy input.
Example. Oil - ERoEI
When oil was originally discovered, it took on average one barrel of oil to find, extract, and process
about 100 barrels of oil. The ratio, for oil in the United States for example, has declined steadily over
the last century from about 1000:1 in 1919 to only 5:1 in the 2010s. This
due to the increased difficulties of extraction. We are now reduced to
fracking as the easily recoverable reserves are exhausted.
Obviously this means that as a 1:1 ratio is approached oil will be
increasingly non-viable (and expensive.)As regards the payback time,
the only reason oil is viable is because the infrastructure was built long
ago. Whenever did you hear of a new oil refinery being built?
Long before this happens we shall have to give up burning oil as a
fuel, it’s far too valuable for other things. This also applies to the other
fossil fuels.
Depletion.
Oil will be the first fossil fuel to become unviable followed by gas and then coal. This is a very major
problem, not only from the energy point of view. Where are our plastics and even tarmac for the roads
going to come from? Will we end up “mining” old refuse sites to recover the plastics so gaily thrown
away today? Where will our lubricants come from? How about pharmaceutical products? How will we
make steel, bricks and cement? How will we make explosives and poison gas? What about artificial
fibres and dyes? Will we even be able to make pots to p**s in?
