Introducing the first online magazine covering the three
villages of Cradley, Storridge and Mathon. This is a monthly
magazine with updates available during that time. We aim to
be very flexible in time scales to allow members of the
communities the maximum time to get their contributions to
us. We have a very relaxed editorial stance only requiring that
submissions meet basic standards of good manners,decency
and of course legality.
So, open house on making a contribution either personally or

From the Parish Council
March 2021
The Parish Council met on Tuesday 9
th
March – the meetings are still virtual, but we’re hopeful of restarting monthly in-
person meetings in July. With fingers firmly crossed that this happens, the council agreed dates for the next year of
meetings, which will be added to the council website shortly.
Keen followers of parish law will know that there is normally an annual parish meeting for all parishioners which is held
in May and gives a chance for all parishioners to have a say about matters of concern in the area. Last year we were
unable to hold the meeting as it got left out of the change of rules that allowed for remote meetings, but that has now
been fixed. As it seems certain that we will still be under coronavirus restrictions in May, the meeting would have to be
held virtually. Would you like to see the meeting for all parishioners go ahead as a virtual meeting? Please let us know.
There is quite a bit of work planned for the recreation areas. The annual inspection was carried out recently and
identified some areas for work; the remaining repainting at Chapel Lane will be done, and there is new equipment being
installed at both Chapel Lane and Buryfields. We hope to get all of that completed in the next few months.
We’re still looking for ideas for ways to improve the parish environment. We’ve had a lot of support for improving
walking and cycling routes, such as routes to school – is this something you’d welcome, or would you suggest something
else?
And, of course, if you’d really like to have a say on how public money should be spent in the parish, the best way is to
become a parish councillor. There are a number of vacancies on the council, and we’re always keen to hear from
people who would like to be join. Please contact the clerk or any of the councillors if you’d like to find out more.

Take your pick from the bunch to the left. Don’t they all look great?
You can grow them in your garden and greenhouse quite easily and cheaply.
Biggest problem is the choosing of what you want to grow.
Pick what you like to eat and then add a few you have never tried or thought you could
never grow. It doesn’t matter if they are a failure, gardening is all about having a go. The
world is not going to end if you fail.

Well, April is almost over and minus the showers this year. Never thought i would be down the garden applying water to
newly planted items in April and with the water but almost empty now! What a crazy thing gardening is and what mother
nature throws at us to overcome. As I always say she does end up winning.
I had given me about 150 un-named bulbs which should have apparently been planted in the Autumn ready for flowering
in March/April. Forgotten in the shed ( that den of iniquity as the good lady calls it!) and planted with a hopeful heart at the
beginning of March looking forward to next year’s showing I was astounded to see that
the daily sunshine has brought forward a miracle! They have started to show above
ground and one type is flowering despite the snow, frost and low night time
temperatures : truly amazing. Motto: stick it in the ground and nature will decide when it
grows not the nurseryman and his books.
Yet another miracle, you will recall that I
decided to transplant a peony which was not
doing well into the new border near the
greenhouse. It has surpassed all my
expectations and I am looking forward to the
best ever flowering for years.
I planted five bare root rose bushes at the beginning of April (where the
peonies failed) and within a couple of days buds were appearing along the
stems giving me high hopes of success. Of course hard frost, and snow saw
those off on three occasions this month but it appears that the roses are
survivors and just today a flush of new growth has made its appearance and renewed my faith and the good ladies hopes
as she loves roses and has talked me into planting more with promises that she will learn how to prune them. Some hope
about as much chance of the kids keeping their solemn promise to look after the puppy and cat you say they can’t have,
but that’s another story.
Last Months promised willow experiment has so far been a
success. I shoved some offcuts from the pruned willow into a
container of water and awaited the promised reaction: new
roots and buds. I tried different lengths and diameters and so
far no failures. Will transplant into the soil when the roots
double in size and report back. Whilst sorting through the wood
pile for a bit of branch I noticed that an off-cut of willow some
4ft long and about 4” diameter had buds on it so have placed
this in the water container to see what happens as it has lain on
the woodpile for a month with no rain so let’s see what mother
nature can do. I might have a ready made willow tree soon!
Some breaking news:
The 16th Cradley Village Hall Annual Produce Show will return on 18th September. Schedules are being worked on as we
speak and despite his recent illness Chrs Lowder will head up the team in bringing this community favourite back, having
been robbed of it last year by the pandemic.
Schedules will be available to download from here and the cradleyvillagehall.org website mid way through
May so watch this spot

“Saturday 1st May will be our last day of trading!
We would like to thank all our loyal customers for there continued support over the last 30
years , we have been blessed with such a lovely clientele and it will be a day of mixed emotions.
The new owners will open after approx 2 weeks (refurbishment)..
We really hope that you will continue to support the new owners in there new business venture
of the lovely village store.

has
been
a
part
of
the
fabric
of
village
life
for
nearly

years
and
has
met
all

When

It is not widely known that we have in Cradley an intrepid couple who
will not mind us
saying, are in what most people would class as the “twilight “ of their years. Where most of us
would be sitting in the back garden in our rocking chairs watching the world go by they are out
quenching their seemingly insatiable thirst for travel. They have put together a website with
which to share their experiences and are happy to help with any advice etc. that they can give to

our website
Both our children spent time travelling around the
world before going to university .
We started travelling after we both qualified as sub
aqua divers. Our first open water dive was in
Mexico then we dived in Indonesia, Philippines and
Micronesia. Afterwards we continued travelling and
now have been to many different countries all over
the world.
How do we do it? Usually we have travelled
with our ruck sacs and have organised our trips
using the Lonely Planet as a guide. We book the
first night as we need to know where we are
staying as we are usually very tired after long
flights. Most of our major holidays have been for
about 5 weeks as this gives us time to see a country
(one country) well.
Why do we do it? We both like to see a
country, meet the people and learn about their
culture, way of life etc. When one meets people
who have such a poor standard of living, it makes
us really appreciate what we have. We have often
said young people should see how the other half
live and would then know how lucky they were. We
love talking to people and in one case while talking
to a young man on a train in India, he 5 years later
contacted us in England, stayed with us and we
then stayed with his family in Nepal in a small
village.
In Nepal we met a WHO worker who stayed with us
then we stayed with his family in Alaska.

Is it my age or did I fall asleep sometime in the past and woke up in an alternative world?
Having been bound hand and foot to my dwelling place by government edict to be
bombarded on the TV with soothsayers who have replaced journalists and trusted
truthful TV stations once the envy of the world? Casting aside their requires
unbiased,neutral stance on reporting the news to become propaganda machines which
would be the envy of any totalitarian state.
Good god! I accept that the government has had to impose certain questionable
requirements to battle the “pandemic” which has invaded the world, or has it?
Little by little our freedoms have been removed unless of course you are a left leaning
woke person who supports every nutty ideology or bandwagon thought up with the sole purpose of destroying society-
but of course do not offer an alternative or allow another to be heard.
I am reminded of a cartoon I saw (here ) some time ago which was of a father Asking his son “ now what are the magic
words to get what you want”? Now we dinosaurs would have stated “please and thank you”. But the son stated “I’m
offended!” I think that sums today’s problems up in one simple statement.
We are dealing with a bigger virus in society than Covid or the black death. A totalitarian non acceptance of debate or
discussion of an opposing thought, ideology or point of view. It started with political correctness some time ago which
crept like a thief in the night into peoples minds to exclude anything as being acceptable unless it complied with invented
ideology. The question was never asked “who said so?” and unthinking acceptance now has reduced us to a society on
the edge of the abyss ready to take that unquestioning step over into oblivion and into the Orwellian predicted future
engineered by those with a desire to control us via big business and big tech all supporting the Big Reset.
I wonder how many of our freedoms will be returned to us after covid is conquered and the “threat” under which they
were taken has gone (or replaced by other manufactured fear)?
Don’t forget that fear ( after sex) is the biggest motivator of human behaviour there is. It has been used by those in
power for centuries to control populations and by advertisers to sell their goods. Think how religious belief is used.
Anyway, as death will not allow me face the consequences of the brown stuff hitting the fan now and am too old to “man
the barricades of the revolution” I will just have another cuppa, get outside on the patio and enjoy the cold sunshine of
May and watch the birds who only worry where the cats are and when they are going to mate.

Imagine being born in 1900
When you're 14 World War begins and it ends when you're 18 with 22 million dead.
Soon after a global pandemic Flu called ' Spanish ",Kills 50 million people.
You go out alive and free you are 20 years old.
At 29, you're going through a global economic crisis that began with the New York Stock Exchange collapse causing
inflation, unemployment and hunger.
Nazis came to power at the age of 33
You're 39 years old when WWII starts and it ends when you have 6 million Jews die during the Holocaust (Shoah).
There will be more than75million deaths.
When you're 52, the Korean War begins.
When you're 64, the Vietnam War begins and ends when you're 75
A baby born in 1985 thinks her grandparents have no idea how hard life is, and he survived several wars and
disasters.
A child born in 1995 and today a 25-year-old thinks it's the end of the world when his Amazon package arrives in
more than three days or doesn't get more than 15 likes for his posted photo on Facebook or Instagram. ..
In 2020 many of us live in comfort, have access to various sources of home entertainment, and often have more
than we need.
But people complain about everything.
However, they have electricity, phone, food, hot water and a roof over their heads.
None of this existed before.
But humanity has survived far more tragic circumstances and has never lost the joy of life.
Maybe it's time to be less selfish, stop complaining and crying.
