Georgina, SHE who will be obeyed
After all these years of marriage to the same man, my inailianable talents as the stronger sex have at last been acknowledged and his lordship has been thrown off his bench ( or at this time of year his armchair in front of the fire) so that I for once can spread my pearls of wisdom amongst the readers of this fine periodical. So thank you editor for recognising the power behind the throne. No longer am I to be the bearer of hot drinks any chocky biccies to himself with a cursory “ta love!.” Whilst there is much spouted by George that I do agree with he doesn’t have a femanine perspective on life. We are of the genration born of the last world war and raised with the last of old values and morals. We worked hard at school for boys to get a good well paid job to have a family and raise them to be a credit to their parents and grandparents. Girls were sent to school to learn to be ladies, cook, (domestic science) and learn the 3R’s ( reading riting and rithmatic but apparently not spelling!) to get a job to await the proposal of marriage to a good man, hopefully with a good background and a well paid job with ‘prospects’ who would look after you for the rest of your life. A bit like fathers and suitors passing the batton of the daughter on. Best achievement at work was to become someones secretary- oh how we dreamed but of course they all disappeared when word processors took over. Then the good looking ones became personal assistants sometimes with the emphasis on “personal”. So for many marriage was the big target. Get married have kids and become a “housewife”and look after the cooking cleaning and bring up th children. On a moral issue, when did lying become an acceptable form of communication? From young children right up to the so called leader of our nation, lying has become endemic in society as a way of getting what you want. We have consumer laws which are supposed to ensure that companies selling stuff do not lie about their products. Being a housewife it fell on me to do the washing and cleaning around the home. Washing clothes is of course a job that is inversly proportional to the number of chidren in the mix. Firstly we had washing powder to handwash clothes. Then as washing machines came of age we have had a constantly increasing set of clains, even within brands that this version is better, faster, cleaner, than every other version of the product. Surely there has to be at a minimum gross hyperbole or out and out lying by these companies. Good god now they have even discovered that we and our clothes smell even when we use their previous version. Lies, lies and more lies. Get rid of all the claims and give us what we need rather than mystical claims and fantasty and of course at a much, much cheaper price…………………….. BUT!
